Kanye West returns with his fourth album 808s & Heartbreak. The highly anticipated 2008 album features the heart pounding first single, "Love Lockdown" as well as "Paranoid" and "Heartless".
2008 was a particularly rough moment in Kanye's life with the tragic passing of his mother Donda West, who had raised Kanye by herself since he was the age of three. She died from complications after cosmetic surgery. Kanye blamed himself for his mother's death, singling out his own vanity, wealth, and pursuit of glamour and celebrity. As a result, he made 808s and Heartbreak, which as the title hints is an introspective, minimal electro-pop record steeped in regret, pain, and even more self-examination than a typical Kanye West album.
When the album was first released both critics and fans had mixed feeling about this new Kanye, but they were especially critical of his rough vocal delivery. Yet, those Auto-Tuned vocals are what’s fueled 808s’ enduring relevance over the past decade. By funneling his angst through the computer, Kanye ironically made himself sound even more human, going from a god on the mic to a mortal in the machine.
